Midlothian Council – Our budget challenge

A series of savings options has been developed by council officers to help address Midlothian Council’s budget gap in 2018/19 and future years. These proposals were presented to a meeting of the full council on Tuesday 10 October 2017 and are now open for public consultation. Your councillors will consider all responses from residents, community groups and others before they take any decisions on the savings proposals.  This will happen in the early part of 2018, as part of the budget setting process for 2018/19.

Follow the link for more information and to take part in the consultation.

Education (Scotland) Bill

Education (Scotland) Bill

The Scottish Government is carrying out a consultation on proposals to be included in the Education (Scotland) Bill. The proposals include creating a school and teacher-led education system with a Headteacher’s Charter, improving parental and community engagement in school life and learning and strengthening pupil participation. It also looks at introducing Regional Improvement Collaboratives and the registration of other educational professionals with the Education Workforce Council.

We would like to submit a response from Midlothian taking into account the experiences and opinions of pupils, staff, parents/carers and parent councils, and communities. Please help us by completing the survey below.

There is more information on the consultation on the Scottish Government’s website – you might want to view or download the questions and think about your responses before coming back to this survey and filling it in.

Parents/Carers Survey to inform our plans for Expansion of ELC to 1140 hours in 2020

Parents/Carers Survey to inform our plans for Expansion of ELC to 1140 hours in 2020

As you may be aware the Scottish Government are almost doubling Early Learning and Childcare (ELC) entitlement available in Early Learning and Childcare settings for all three and four-year-olds and eligible two-year-olds by 2020.

The move will see the hours increased from 600 to 1140 hours, a change from around 16 hours to about 30 hours of free ELC per week. Parents will have the option to use it during term time or it could be spread all year round to cover holiday periods and fit in with work patterns as well.

Parents and carers are being asked to fill in a new Midlothian Council survey about how they would use the 1140 hours of free early learning and childcare (EL&C) they will be entitled to by 2020.
