Woodburn WOW Awards

Woodburn WOW certificates are awarded to one pupil from each class in assembly on a Friday for showing outstanding achievement and skill, for example, “For showing great perseverance in maths when finding things tricky.” “For being a good friend in the playground and encouraging others to join in a game.” All of our Woodburn WOWs are then invited to celebrate their success at a small tea party with Miss Ramage, our Head Teacher.

Winter arrangements and severe weather guidelines.

As we are now into getting into winter, may we remind you to make sure that your child knows what to do should the school be closed for bad weather or heating failure. If there is bad weather at the weekend and there is a question about the school being opened the procedure is to listen to Radio Forth and Radio Scotland for information. Midlothian website www.midlothian.gov.uk will also have regularly updated information.

We would, of course, never send children home early from school unless we were sure that there was an adult to receive them.

It is extremely important that all phone numbers and emergency contact numbers are kept up to date and we would urge you to let the office staff know as early as possible if phone numbers have changed.

If weather is bad and the school is open we would appreciate the children coming to school as near bell time as possible. We endeavour to let children in to school early in bad weather, but this relies on staff being available in wings to cover as children cannot be left unattended. We would also appreciate the children being dressed appropriately with a warm winter jacket, hats, gloves and a scarf, as well as appropriate footwear. If you child is coming to school in Wellington/Winter boots please ensure they have a pair of indoor shoes to change into.

Here is the policy guideline from Midlothian Council.

Our Citizenship Gatherings

Each week, we gather as a whole school to focus on a topical subject. During these sessions, we strive to build self-esteem and resilience within our pupils, with a view to improving our school ethos and the ‘learning and teaching’ of our children.

Our Citizenship Gathering Programme so far…..

Week  1 – ‘Our Rights’, ‘Our Charters’ & ‘A Quality Learner’

Week 2 – ‘The Brain’

Week 3 – ‘Mindsets’

Week 4 – ‘The Learning Pit’

Week 5 – ‘Making Mistakes’

Week 6 – ‘Meta-cognition’

Week 7– ‘Respecting others’ & ‘Being beautiful on the inside’

Class Teachers are involved in follow up activities and dialogue with the children to embed their learning further.
